Could we get better nutrition from grass 🌱❓

Green leaves 🥬are all full of protein so called #RuBisCO
But would... grasslands rich in this protein provide high-quality & organic nutrition for cattle & people?

🌱From #grass to #cellulose: A sustainable journ 🌱From #grass to #cellulose: A sustainable journey - Part 1

Let’s take a closer look at the incredible journey grass goes through to become cellulose fibre, an important ingredient in the production of paper and packaging.📄📦

We start with dried grass, which is rich in cellulose but mixed with unwanted components.

In the second frame we see the magic of nature at work! Bacteria have broken down sugars and proteins through dry digestion. Now we have to wash out the bacteria and dissolved components.

Last frame: The washed grass is ready for the next step, alkali treatment. This process will then remove lignin and other impurities so that the cellulose fibres are ready for shredding.

Stay tuned as we continue to explore #grasspaper making. #bioproducts #bioecomy #papermaking
For the past month, we have been celebrating the b For the past month, we have been celebrating the beauty, diversity, and importance of European grasslands 🌿 But these fascinating biomes* are facing significant threats, putting biodiversity and their vital ecosystem services at risk.

⚠️Up to 90% of European semi-natural grasslands have been lost in the 20th century and around 10 million hectares need restoration. It's crucial to reverse this trend and protect these precious landscapes. The following strategies could help:

🔥 Traditional management techniques - practices like controlled fires and grazing, adapted to local characteristics, such as weather, type of vegetation, soil, etc, have played a vital role in shaping and maintaining grasslands for centuries and are still useful to maintain biodiversity.

🚜 Reduce management intensity – minimizing or eliminating the use of artificial fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides helps safeguard biodiversity. Delaying the mowing date until later in the summer allows plants to complete their life cycles, supporting diverse species and promoting ecosystem health.

💐 Restore Biodiversity - biodiversity is crucial for the resilience of grassland ecosystems. Sowing native plant species and increasing the diversity of the sowing mix promotes species-richness. It's equally important to remove invasive and harmful species that threaten the delicate balance of these habitats.

Today we are highlighting the crucial role grassla Today we are highlighting the crucial role grasslands play in ecosystems and sustaining our planet. 🌍
Grasslands provide vital ecosystem services like:

🌫️CO2 Sequestration - grasslands act as natural carbon sinks. They absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) during plant growth and store it in their tissues, storing about 34% of global terrestrial carbon. They are essential allies essential in mitigating climate change!

💧 Water Management – Due to their deep-rooted systems, grasslands enhance water infiltration and play a crucial role in purifying water resources! In agricultural areas, they prevent harmful chemicals and excess nutrients from running off into waterways, ensuring clean water for ecosystems and communities.

🌱Erosion Control – Grasslands’ shallow and dense root systems, combined with lateral growth, provide stability. Because of this, grasslands offer effective protection against soil erosion and can minimize downstream flooding!

🚵Cultural Legacy - Grasslands hold a rich cultural legacy deeply intertwined with human history! Millennia of land management practices have shaped these landscapes, connecting countries, continents, and cultures. They continue to provide valuable resources and spaces for recreation and are crucial elements of some nations’ cultural identity, e.g. the beautiful alpine landscapes of Switzerland.

European grasslands are buzzing with life! 🐝 O European grasslands are buzzing with life! 🐝

On our journey to explore these beautiful semi-natural ecosystems, today we focus on the astounding biodiversity of grasslands. ❓Did you know that:

🌱 Grasslands boast a high diversity of plant species! They are home to at least 1320 plants endemic to Europe*.

🦋 Grasslands are the main habitat for many insects and pollinators, such as grasshoppers, hoverflies, bees, and butterflies! In fact, out of all butterfly species in Europe, 88% can be found on grasslands, and 57% inhabit only this type of habitat. Because of this, butterflies, including the Adonis blue (Lysandra bellargus) in photo 3, are often monitored as an indicator of insect biodiversity!

🪶 Many bird species are also found on grasslands all over Europe. 29% of commonly spotted bird species can be found in these biomes! Unfortunately, grassland birds, like the Great bustard (Otis tarda) in photo 4, are among the most threatened bird species in the European Union.

🐿️ Many other animals depend on nutrients and condition offered by grasslands, including livestock and small mammals! 200 protected mammal species, including the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) in photo 5, depend on grasslands to survive.

Summer is in full bloom! With the pleasant weather Summer is in full bloom! With the pleasant weather beckoning us outside, it's the perfect time to celebrate the beauty of Europe's diverse grasslands.

🌱 Semi-natural grasslands originated thousands of years ago when humans cleared forests for agriculture, creating rich biomes! Today we explore four beautiful semi-natural grasslands:

🌄 The Faroe Islands' Boreal Grasslands – The harsh, humid, and windy climate presents a challenge for vegetation to grow, and there are almost no trees on the islands! Because of this, the predominant vegetation is grassland.

🌿 The Dehesa (or Montado) – a Mediterranean agrosilvopastoral* system dating back to the Neolithic period. These semi-natural grasslands are among the most sustainable and well-preserved farming systems in Europe, as they integrate traditional, low-intensity land-use with conservation of biodiversity! The climate is hot and dry in the summer and mild in the winter.

🍀 Machair – this type of grassland found only in Scotland and Ireland is one of the rarest habitats in Europe! Some of these sand dune system areas are used for farming, while others are used as hay meadows.

🏔️ The Alpine Grassland- found at 1100-3200 m altitudes. Snow cover shields plants from harsh winds and desiccation. When the snow melts, a brief 6-12 week growing season ensues, urging rapid growth and early flowering.
